Men's Love, abbreviated "ML" (sometimes also called Bara Manga in the West) is a genre of Japanese fiction dealing with male homosexuality. These can be literary works, short stories or manga, or even illustrations. The genre is dedicated to an informed gay public, and stages romances and love stories between virile and muscular men.
It is differentiated as opposed to the genre of Yaoi or Boy's Love, abbreviated "BL" whose protagonists are rather ephebes or androgynes. This other style is mainly drawn by women for heterosexual women.
The Yarō-Kei , which can literally be translated as " Asshole Mode " is a genre apart, a specialization of Men's Love . The narration of the Yarō-Kei is turned towards power relations between men, it expresses the wildest fantasies of Men's Love . There are different forms of domination , scenes of sadomasochism and more or less hard erotic torture .
Gengoroh Tagame is the most emblematic author of this genre. He is also one of the authors of the best known and best known gay manga in the world.
Kemono (獣 wild beast) is a genre of Japanese art inherited from the tradition of Chōjū-giga (鳥獣戯画Animal caricatures) from 12th century anthropomorphic prints whose characters are animals that assume human roles.
Beyond the manga, the Kemono style encompasses many popular cartoons like the Sherlock Holmes by Hayao Miyazaki (1984). With the appearance of the Furry movement in the mid-1980s, Kemono inspired many manga-ka , illustrators and authors to make erotic works whose animal characters have a cute appearance sometimes contrasting with their beastly sexuality.
